We (Angelica and Amanda) are working with Dr Carla.  We see patients at Rahab’s House, as well as in the community.  Today we saw patients from the Brick Factory.  We were located just across the street, in front of a wooden shack with a tin roof.  We saw 122 patients today, with everything from itchy skin and fatigue to blood pressure so high that the patient was at risk for stroke.  As pediatricians, we were particularly struck by the malnutrition.  Children here are so tiny and appear years younger than their actual age.  They rarely cry and seem more docile.  Yet, we saw many with big smiles and laughter, especially when the GIANT mouse (think “opossum”) came running through.

We realize that we can’t cure all of their medical problems.  We have found that prayer is a better medicine.  We prayed with people with anxiety.  For example, one woman complained of “”shaking heart” (panic attacks) that started after she was beaten unconscious by a neighbor.  The neighbor was in a fight with her brother, and after her brother fled town, the neighbor took it out on her.  She was encouraged to come to church and learn more about Jesus who could replace her fear with love and peace.  photo 2
